Best for general home-workshop assembly
Yost LV-4 Homeowners Vise
General home-workshop assembly.
Why it fits
- Yost describes LV-4 for woodworking, assembly and general maintenance, with a locking base that swivels 240 degrees. It has 4½ inch wide jaws, a 3 inch jaw opening and a 2.6 inch throat depth. The vise has replaceable hardened-steel serrated jaw faces and holds pipes or tubes from 0.6 to 1.85 inches in diameter. [1] [2] [3]
Before you choose
- A 4½ inch jaw width does not provide a 4½ inch opening: the documented opening is 3 inches. Serrated faces also need appropriate covers for finished surfaces. [1] [2] [3]
Check before buying:
- The retained product page does not specify the mounting-hole pattern, included mounting hardware, rated holding force or the exact replacement-jaw part number.

Best for four-point bench mounting for general shop tasks
Wilton WS4 Shop Vise
Four-point bench mounting for general shop tasks.
Why it fits
- The Wilton WS4 specification sheet identifies general-duty use, a 360-degree swivel base and two lockdowns. The retained WS4 specification sheet lists 4 inch wide jaws, a 4 inch maximum opening, a 2¾ inch throat depth and four mounting points. The selected sheet lists replaceable serrated top jaws, built-in pipe jaws and an anvil work surface. [4] [5] [6]
Before you choose
- Four mounting points require a suitable bench and matching hardware. The sheet confirms pipe jaws but does not state a numeric pipe capacity. [4] [5] [6]
Check before buying:
- The maker sheet describes gray cast iron and a 2¾ inch throat, while the Lowe’s listing describes ductile iron and a 2.075 inch throat. Current supplied material and throat depth remain unresolved; confirm the exact revision before buying. We do not rank by differing strength labels. Mounting-hole spacing and exact jaw-replacement part number remain unresolved.

Best for a compact bolted vise with two base locks
BESSEY Heavy Duty Bench Vise
A compact bolted vise with two base locks.
Why it fits
- BESSEY describes BV-HD40 as a bench-top bolted vise with a 360-degree swivel base, three mounting holes and two lockdowns. The selected model has 4 inch wide jaws, a 4 inch opening and a 2 inch throat depth; its brochure gives an approximate 13 pound weight. The brochure identifies a ductile-iron body, serrated jaws and an integrated anvil for this bench-vise design. [7] [8] [9]
Before you choose
- Its brochure lists a 2 inch throat, compared with 2¾ inches for BV-MPV5; WS4’s current throat depth needs confirmation because sources conflict. Allow for the mounting footprint, not just the jaw width. [7] [8] [9]
Check before buying:
- Mounting-hole spacing, pipe capacity, rated holding force and the exact replacement-jaw kit are not established by the retained brochure. The maker-hosted brochure is marked 03.20; confirm the current supplied model.
Model: BESSEY Heavy Duty Bench Vise · BV-HD40 · US
- #4
Best for rotating jaw access for pipe and bench work
BESSEY Multi-Purpose Rotating Vise
Rotating jaw access for pipe and bench work.
Why it fits
- BESSEY describes BV-MPV5 as a rotating pipe-and-bench vise with jaws that rotate 360 degrees and a built-in anvil. It has 5 inch wide jaws, a 5 inch opening, a 2¾ inch throat depth and an approximate 29 pound weight. The brochure specifies a 2 inch pipe capacity, a ductile-iron body, three bench mounting holes and two base lockdowns. [10] [11] [12]
Before you choose
- At approximately 29 pounds, this is a more substantial installation than the smaller bench models. Base-swivel range needs confirmation: the brochure says 270 degrees in its overview and 360 degrees in the product description. [10] [11] [12]
Check before buying:
- Rated holding force, mounting-hole spacing and replacement-jaw details are unresolved. The 360-degree jaw rotation is distinct from the conflicting base-swivel descriptions. The retained brochure is marked 03.20.

Best for a homeowner vise with an anvil horn
Olympia Tools 4-Inch Bench Vise
A homeowner vise with an anvil horn.
Why it fits
- Olympia describes 38-604 as a homeowner bench vise with a polished anvil and an anvil horn for shaping. It has a 4 inch jaw width, a four-lug base and a base that swivels 270 degrees with a lock lever. The maker lists replaceable hardened-steel jaw faces, permanent pipe jaws and a spindle guard against dirt and chips. [13] [14] [15]
Before you choose
- The 4 inch headline is jaw width; the retained page does not state jaw opening or throat depth. Confirm those capacities before choosing it for a specific workpiece. [13] [14] [15]
Check before buying:
- Numeric pipe capacity, mounting-hole spacing, included hardware, replacement-jaw part number and rated holding force are unspecified. The maker says appearances and packaging may change as its catalog is revised.

Best for removable workholding on a table edge
IRWIN Clamp-On Vise
Removable workholding on a table edge.
Why it fits
Before you choose
- The table-thickness limit and pipe-jaw capacity are separate specifications. Check edge shape and underside clearance as well as thickness before installing. [16] [17] [18]
Check before buying:
- Jaw width, flat-jaw opening, throat depth, swivel range, replaceable-jaw details and rated holding force are not specified by the retained maker page. No heavy-impact capacity is inferred.

Best for small hobby parts with adjustable working angles
PanaVise Standard Vise
Small hobby parts with adjustable working angles.
Why it fits
- PanaVise describes Model 301 for hobbies, electronics and small home repairs; one knob controls 90-degree tilt, 360-degree turn and 360-degree rotation. Its nylon jaws are 2½ inches wide and ½ inch tall, with a 2¼ inch opening. The base has a 4.3125 inch bolt circle for three ¼ inch flat-head screws, not included; the maker catalog identifies interchangeable jaws. [19] [20] [21]
Before you choose
- The small nylon-jaw design is a specialized hobby holder. Its documented size and materials do not establish the capacity of an iron mechanics vise. A weighted or clamp base mount is an additional accessory, not assumed in Model 301. [19] [20] [21]
Check before buying:
- Throat depth and rated holding force are not established. The maker catalog gives nylon-jaw heat limits of 200°F continuous and 300°F intermittent; those are material limits, not permission to direct flame at the jaws. Exact current replacement-jaw selection should be checked.

Best for temporary mounting on a nonporous surface
BESSEY Vacuum Base Vise
Temporary mounting on a nonporous surface.
Why it fits
Before you choose
- A vacuum base requires a suitable nonporous surface; the brochure does not establish attachment to an unfinished porous wooden bench. Verify attachment before work. [22] [23] [24]
Check before buying:
- Throat depth, rated holding force, continuous attachment duration and exact replacement-pad or jaw part numbers are not specified. The retained brochure is marked 03.20.

Best for frequent size changes in woodworking
Shop Fox Quick-Release Wood Vise
Frequent size changes in woodworking.
Why it fits
- Shop Fox’s D4327 instructions describe a quick-release lever that disengages the leadscrew so the sliding jaw can move freely, plus an adjustable bench dog. D4327 has a 7 inch jaw width, an 8 inch maximum opening and a 21 pound listed weight. The vise is designed for benches at least 2¼ inches thick, adaptable down to 1½ inches with a shim; holes accept separately supplied or shop-made wooden jaw pads. [25] [26] [27]
Before you choose
- Installation needs preparation at the bench front and underside, including any required shim and jaw pads. This is a woodworking face-vise arrangement rather than a portable swivel-base mechanics vise. [25] [26] [27]
Check before buying:
- Throat depth and rated holding force are not specified. Wood jaw pads are not included; confirm current model and installation hardware. The manual covers models manufactured since December 2017.

Best for light woodworking with custom wooden facings
BESSEY Light Duty Wood Vise
Light woodworking with custom wooden facings.
Why it fits
Before you choose
- Select and fit suitable wooden facings for the workpiece. The light-duty description should not be treated as a documented heavy-impact or metal-fabrication rating. [28] [29] [30]
Check before buying:
- The brochure does not establish a swivel base, quick-release mechanism, mounting pattern, supplied wooden facings or rated holding force. Confirm the installation instructions and current revision of this model; the retained brochure is marked 03.20.

Measure the workpiece in three directions
LV-4 has 4½ inch wide jaws but only a 3 inch opening. The retained WS4 sheet lists a 4 inch opening and 2¾ inch throat, but its current throat depth needs confirmation because Lowe’s lists 2.075 inches. BV-HD40’s brochure lists a 2 inch throat. Jaw width describes contact span, opening describes separation, and throat depth describes clearance below the jaws. Match all three to the way you intend to orient the part; pipe-jaw capacity is a separate limit. [2] [3] [5] [8]
Choose the mount before the biggest jaws
WS4 lists four mounting points and BV-HD40 lists three. IRWIN’s removable clamp accepts a table up to 2 inches thick. BESSEY’s vacuum model requires a nonporous surface. D4327 is installed at the front and underside of a woodworking bench and may need a shim. Check the exact hole pattern, hardware, underside clearance and bench construction; a large jaw specification does not establish a suitable mounting surface. [5] [7] [17] [24] [27]
Match jaw surfaces and positioning to the job
LV-4’s replaceable serrated steel faces, PanaVise 301’s nylon jaws and BV-WV65’s provision for wooden facings serve different workpieces. Choose suitable covers or facings when the finish matters and confirm the exact replacement part. BV-MPV5’s rotating jaws are useful when you need access at another angle, but its brochure conflicts on base-swivel range; jaw rotation does not resolve that discrepancy. No comparative grip or surface-damage tests are claimed here. [3] [20] [30] [10]
How we compared.
Source-based comparison of actual maker pages, specification sheets and manuals read October 2, 2026. Ten distinct models cover bolted shop vises, rotating jaws, removable clamp and vacuum mounts, a small precision vise and wood face vises; size variants of one design are excluded. General bench work comes first, followed by specialized mounting and woodworking tasks. The BESSEY brochure is marked 03.20 and the Shop Fox instructions cover models manufactured since December 2017; reading them now does not establish current stock or every revision change. Wilton and PanaVise manufacturer documents are hosted by distributors. Newark’s current 301 listing corroborates its identity and jaw dimensions. One maker-hosted Yost owner comment, by Charley1140, describes LV-4 as useful for small projects; that is one anecdote, not owner consensus or our test. We have not measured clamping force, holding strength, jaw parallelism or durability. Casting tensile-strength labels are not treated as workholding-force ratings. Jaw width, opening, throat depth, pipe capacity and table-clamp capacity are separate measurements. Unknown specifications and conflicting descriptions stay explicit. Follow the exact model’s installation and operating instructions and use jaw surfaces appropriate for the workpiece finish.
