All 10 picks, in order.

  1. #1

    Best for small brush-lettered names

    Tombow Fudenosuke Hard Tip

    Small brush-lettered names.

    Why it fits

    • Start here if you want a compact brush-lettering tool without a separate ink bottle; the documented fine stroke range is the buying reason. [1] [2] [3]

    Before you choose

    • Brush pressure controls the stroke. This is not a broad-edge italic nib or a pointed metal dip nib. [1] [2] [3]

    Check before buying:

    • A numeric stroke-width range and suitability for your envelope coating are unverified.

Model: Tombow Fudenosuke Hard Tip · Hard Tip Black, SKU 82038 · US

  2. #2

Best for an included-ink start to pointed-dip lettering

Manuscript Modern Calligraphy Dip Pen Set

An included-ink start to pointed-dip lettering.

    Why it fits

    • Choose this for the pointed-dip route: three named nibs, a holder, black ink and a worksheet are supplied together. [4] [5] [6]

    Before you choose

    • Expect re-dipping and cleanup rather than cartridge feeding. The small included bottle does not establish how many invitations it will cover. [4] [5] [6]

    Check before buying:

    • Relative nib flexibility, a numeric line-width range and handedness suitability are unverified; confirm the exact regional MDP4001 bundle.

Model: Manuscript Modern Calligraphy Dip Pen Set · MDP4001, turquoise holder, three Leonardt nibs · US

  3. #3

Best for flat-nib place cards without cartridges

    Sakura Pigma Calligrapher

    Flat-nib place cards without cartridges.

    Why it fits

    • The maker’s place-card use and single 2 mm flat tip make this a focused choice for broad-edge lettering with minimal equipment. [7] [8] [9]

    Before you choose

    • Its hard flat nib is a different lettering tool from the flexible brush pens; practice its angle before writing finished cards. [7] [8] [9]

    Check before buying:

    • Performance on textured, glossy or coated wedding cards is unverified.

Model: Sakura Pigma Calligrapher · 2 mm, Black single pen · US

  4. #4

Best for a plate nib for broad-edge headings

    Pilot Parallel Pen

A plate nib for broad-edge headings.

    Why it fits

    • Choose the 2.4 mm Parallel when you want a width-based calligraphy pen and dedicated nib-cleaning tools in the kit. [10] [11] [12]

    Before you choose

    • The 2.4 mm edge needs a layout suited to that width; this is not a pressure-flex pointed pen for fine script. [10] [11] [12]

    Check before buying:

    • Current US pack contents and ink compatibility beyond the supplied Parallel system need confirmation; the US brochure is older literature.

Model: Pilot Parallel Pen · 2.4 mm pen set · US

  5. #5

Best for a reusable cartridge pen for italic-style cards

    LAMY joy Fountain Pen

A reusable cartridge pen for italic-style cards.

    Why it fits

    • Choose joy if you prefer a full-length fountain-pen body and a 1.5 mm ribbon nib with a documented cartridge or converter route. [13] [14] [15]

    Before you choose

    • The included cartridge is blue. Plan a separate compatible ink purchase if the wedding lettering must be black; a converter is an accessory. [13] [14] [15]

    Check before buying:

    • The page mentions left-handed availability without establishing the exact configuration for every nib option; confirm the selected 1.5 mm version.

Model: LAMY joy Fountain Pen · Black, 1.5 mm calligraphy nib · US

  6. #6

Best for comparing four fountain-calligraphy widths

    Kaweco SPORT Calligraphy Set

    Comparing four fountain-calligraphy widths.

    Why it fits

    • This is the choice when one lettering width is not settled: swap the four supplied front parts to compare a name line with a heading. [16] [17] [18]

    Before you choose

    • Buy the full four-width set; the smaller Set S and individual pens have different contents. Width options do not establish nib flexibility. [16] [17] [18]

    Check before buying:

    • Converter compatibility, handedness fit and current US bundle availability are unresolved; the maker’s store showed temporary unavailability when read.

Model: Kaweco SPORT Calligraphy Set · Black, four front parts, item 10000229 · US

  7. #7

Best for peach accents with a second fine tip

Tombow Dual Brush Pen Art Marker

Peach accents with a second fine tip.

    Why it fits

    • Choose this for pastel brush-lettered accents and fine-tip details in one marker, rather than black address text. [19] [20] [21]

    Before you choose

    • Peach is an accent-color choice; check contrast at the final lettering size before using it for names that guests must read. [19] [20] [21]

    Check before buying:

    • Refillability, numeric brush-width limits and readability on your stationery color are not established.

Model: Tombow Dual Brush Pen Art Marker · 020 Peach, SKU 56501 · US

  8. #8

    Best for refillable bristle-brush flourishes

    Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

    Refillable bristle-brush flourishes.

    Why it fits

    • Choose Pocket Brush for a bristle-brush format with a documented refill system, especially when you want expressive lettering accents rather than a flat edge. [22] [23] [24]

    Before you choose

    • This is a synthetic-bristle brush, not the firm tip of Fudenosuke. Do not assume the same control or letter size when switching tools. [22] [23] [24]

    Check before buying:

    • Numeric line-width limits, handedness suitability and current US pack contents are unresolved; regional ink/refill bundles differ.

Model: Pentel Pocket Brush Pen · GFKP3, black pigment ink · US

  9. #9

Best for exploring broad-edge and pointed dip nibs

    Speedball Calligraphy Pen Set

Exploring broad-edge and pointed dip nibs.

    Why it fits

    • Choose this mixed nib set when you want to compare C-Series lettering with two pointed nibs using one included standard holder. [25] [26] [27]

    Before you choose

    • Ink is not listed in the set contents; budget for a separate suitable dip-pen ink. Nib swapping and cleanup are part of the workflow. [25] [26] [27]

    Check before buying:

    • Numeric widths and comparative nib spring are not established; do not confuse it with the separate fountain-pen set.

Model: Speedball Calligraphy Pen Set · C1–C4, pointed #101 and #512, Standard Holder · US

  10. #10

Best for left-handed italic dip lettering

    Speedball Left-Handed Pen Set

    Left-handed italic dip lettering.

    Why it fits

    • This is the dedicated handedness choice: the maker identifies the LC set for left-handed lettering rather than asking readers to adapt the standard C set. [28] [29] [30]

    Before you choose

    • Ink is not listed in the contents. This is a dip set for lettering practice, not a refillable pen or proof that every left-handed grip will suit it. [28] [29] [30]

    Check before buying:

    • Numeric nib widths, exact paper compatibility and comfort with your grip are unresolved.

WorkflowTombow describes pressure-controlled extra-fine, fine and medium strokes for calligraphy. [1]Manuscript identifies this set for modern calligraphy and supplies a practice worksheet. [4]Sakura specifically describes the 2 mm Pigma Calligrapher for place cards. [7]Pilot describes Parallel for lettering and calligraphy, with stroke width changing as the nib angle changes. [10]LAMY describes joy for calligraphy and creatively lettered cards. [13]Kaweco describes the SPORT set for calligraphy with interchangeable front parts. [16]Tombow lists the Dual Brush Pen for hand lettering and describes fine, medium or bold brush strokes with a separate consistent-line fine tip. [19]Pentel describes fine-to-broad lines from one stroke and includes calligraphy among the Pocket Brush’s uses. [22]Speedball describes this set for Roman text, italic alphabets, ornamental work and fine lettering. [25]Speedball explicitly describes this separate set for left-handed italic and Roman Gothic lettering. [28]
Form factorThe selected pen has a firm yet flexible hard brush tip and water-based pigmented black ink. [2]MDP4001 contains a turquoise holder, Leonardt 40 Shorthand, 30 Point and Principal EF nibs, plus a 7 ml bottle of black ink. [5]It has a flat, hard nylon nib with Pigma pigment ink; the selected version is black and 2 mm. [8]The selected nib is 2.4 mm; Pilot’s leaflet describes two stainless-steel plates that feed ink between them. [11]The black joy has a polished-steel ribbon calligraphy nib, an ergonomic grip and a tapered plastic body; 1.5 mm is a listed nib option. [14]Item 10000229 contains calligraphy nib widths of 1.1, 1.5, 1.9 and 2.3 mm, with three protective caps for the extra front parts. [17]The selected 020 Peach marker has a flexible nylon brush tip and a fine tip, using water-based blendable ink. [20]The GFKP3 uses synthetic bristles and black pigment ink. [23]The set includes four C Series nibs C1–C4, pointed nibs #101 and #512, and one Standard Pen Holder. [26]The set includes LC0, LC1, LC2, LC3 and LC4 nibs, #513EF, and one Standard Pen Holder. [29]
CompatibilityIt is non-refillable; Tombow recommends smooth, non-textured paper and advises against regular copy paper. [3]The maker instructs dipping about one third of the nib, wiping excess ink, re-dipping as needed, then rinsing and thoroughly drying after use. [6]It is not refillable; Sakura advises breaking it in on smooth paper, holding it almost perpendicular and cushioning the writing surface with a small paper stack. [9]Pilot’s US brochure lists black and red cartridges, a flushing pipette, nib cleaner and care guide with each separately packaged pen. [12]The US page includes one blue LAMY T 10 cartridge and recommends the optional Z 28 converter for bottled ink. [15]The black SPORT fountain-pen set includes two packs of Kaweco Pearl Black ink cartridges. [18]Tombow recommends smooth, non-textured paper and horizontal storage to help maintain consistent ink color over time. [21]Pentel’s GFKP3 page specifies the FP10-A refill; its official brush brochure describes FP10 cartridge refilling. [24]Speedball describes its standard straight holder for most nibs, with separate holders needed for specified quills; used nibs should be cleaned and dried immediately. [27]Speedball’s holder guidance distinguishes standard straight and oblique systems; it instructs cleaning used nibs and drying them immediately. [30]

Choose the lettering style first

For a compact pressure-controlled brush, start with Fudenosuke Hard Tip. Manuscript MDP4001 supplies pointed-dip nibs and ink. Sakura’s flat nylon tip, Pilot’s plate nib and LAMY’s ribbon nib offer different width-based lettering formats. Choose the tool for the script you intend to practice; moving between these formats is not just changing pen size. [1] [5] [8] [11] [14]

Keep the ink system with its pen

LAMY joy uses T 10 cartridges with an optional Z 28 converter; the Kaweco set supplies its own Pearl Black cartridges. Pentel Pocket Brush has the documented FP10 route. Fudenosuke and Pigma Calligrapher are not refillable. The Manuscript and Speedball dip sets require dipping and cleanup. Confirm the exact pen’s ink instructions before buying replacement ink; a bottle or cartridge is not a universal refill. [15] [18] [24] [3] [9] [6] [27]

Practice on the actual stationery

Tombow recommends smooth, non-textured paper for both selected pens. Sakura gives a near-perpendicular hold and cushioned writing-surface instructions. Use a spare piece of the exact envelope or card to check the intended lettering size, visible contrast and handling before a batch. No drying time or bleed-through result is established here. For dip nibs, follow the maker’s cleaning and drying instructions after the session. [3] [21] [9] [6] [27] [30]

How we compared.

Source-based comparison of actual manufacturer pages and official Pilot and Pentel literature read October 2, 2026. Lindsey Bugbee’s March 2022 article at The Postman’s Knock distinguishes brush and pointed-dip workflows and describes her personal preference for pointed pens; that teaching perspective is not owner consensus or a TenBest test. The site also sells supplies and courses. Ranking starts with compact brush lettering and a pointed-dip starter, then covers broad-edge formats, larger brush accents and a dedicated left-handed dip set. These tools produce different lettering styles. We have not tested writing, drying, bleed-through, fade resistance or comfort. No pen is established here as suitable for every envelope, coated card, textured stock or vellum. Practice on a spare piece of the exact stationery before lettering the batch. Handedness is unresolved unless explicitly described; the left-handed set is a separate product, not a second size of the standard set. Regional bundle contents can differ; check the selected US listing, especially for imported pens and sets.
