Measure the corner or set the bevel
Use hinged contact arms to measure the opening between trim surfaces. Bosch offers simple and compound calculations; Klein 935DAF supplies a simple-miter workflow; STABILA locks and halves angles; Wixey WR412 uses its Set Miter sequence. A small magnetic inclination gauge serves a different job: establishing a bevel relative to a reference surface. [1] [4] [8] [12] [16]
Clean contact and the reference zero matter. Johnson starts with the previous zero; Wixey has you establish a reference before transferring the gauge. The Wixey protractor manual directs users to turn off and unplug power tools before measuring. Follow the instrument and saw manuals rather than treating a digital reading as a finished-joint guarantee. [30] [16] [12]
Read the tolerance, not just the last decimal
General 822 displays 0.1° steps but states ±0.3° accuracy. Current Wixey WR300 Type 2 states ±0.2° accuracy and ±0.1° repeatability, while the discontinued Type 1 has different specifications. SOLA’s second decimal does not make its measurement tolerance 0.01°. Check the exact version instead of comparing display digits alone. [14] [17] [18] [26]
Klein 935DAG and Milwaukee publish tighter tolerances near particular cardinal angles than elsewhere. Milwaukee also states a temperature band and magnetic-base condition. These figures describe maker limits, not our measured ranking. For a 45° trim bevel, use the applicable tolerance rather than the tighter headline number. [20] [23]
How we compared.
Source-based comparison of manufacturer pages and selected manuals read October 22, 2026. Noelle Howe’s Pro Tool Reviews feature overview highlights the Klein 935DAF’s simple-miter calculation and wide locking knob; this informed its compact-tool role, not a tested superiority claim. Bosch leads for compound-miter calculation and stored-angle workflow. Hinged tools measure between contact arms; magnetic inclination gauges support bevel setup and are not interchangeable with corner protractors. We have not tested accuracy or joint fit. Ranking is independent of commission.
