Choose water corrections or permanent acrylic layers

Talens Extra Fine and Art Creation explicitly allow water reworking after drying. Holbein Acrylic Gouache and Liquitex describe water-resistant dry finishes. Choose according to whether you want to adjust a dried layer with water or preserve it under later work; a matte appearance alone does not identify the binder. [12] [21] [27] [30]

Compare actual contents before buying

A color count hides major format differences. Caran d’Ache supplies fourteen tablets plus tube white and a brush. Holbein D411 supplies twelve colors with a larger 40 ml white tube. Liquitex supplies bottles; the Schmincke themed selection has only five 5 ml tubes. Choose the exact set rather than transferring another size’s contents. [14] [26] [29] [23]

Treat opacity and dilution as color-specific

M. Graham ties opacity to pigments rather than added white; Liquitex acknowledges semi-opaque colors in its acrylic range. Winsor & Newton warns that excessively thick or insufficiently diluted gouache can crack. Use the maker’s handling guidance and try your own paper before deciding how much water or white to add. [9] [30] [3]

How we compared.

Source-based comparison of manufacturer pages and technical information read October 2, 2026, with a US retail listing for the Schmincke themed set. Catherine Gura’s informal 2018 trial, published on Gurney Journey, compared one blue per brand fresh and after five days drying in pans. She found reactivated paint differed from fresh paint; the pigments also differed, so this is a handling caution, not a current brand ranking or owner consensus. We have not tested these paints, measured coverage or scanning quality, or conducted fade tests. Ranking prioritizes distinct palette and workflow choices rather than multiple sizes of the same range. Reworking is stated where the manufacturer documents it; water thinning alone does not establish dried-palette performance. Acrylic gouache is separated from traditional gouache. Opacity depends on the color and dilution, and no universal permanence claim is made. Check the selected set and US seller; contents may vary where noted.
