Separate water volume from gear volume

Pack liters and reservoir liters describe different space. The CamelBak M.U.L.E. 12 has 12L of pack space with a 3L reservoir; the Rim Runner X22 has 22L of pack space but an included 1.5L reservoir. Match both figures to your route and layers. [28] [19]

Refilling should fit the route

Gregory’s Swift 22 and Citro 24 use a dedicated hydration sleeve and SpeedClip hanger; the Swift also specifies an inline hose disconnect. Osprey’s Manta 24 uses a separate water compartment and QuickConnect. Those access designs matter when refilling mid-hike. [16] [4] [10]

Compare loaded fit, not just listed weight

The Manta 24 lists 3.4 lb and adds a suspended-mesh frame; the Sportlite 20 lists 1.6 lb and uses a close-to-body foam panel. Makers do not consistently state whether published pack weights include reservoirs. Fit each pack with the water and gear you expect to carry. [12] [10] [3] [1]
