Makita XDT20Z
Makita XDT20Z
Assist and tightening modes with a rear speed selector
Why it fits
- Makita leads for its mix of control options: four selectable speeds, a low-start Assist Mode, two tightening modes for self-drilling metal screws and reverse auto-stop. The rear selector allows one-handed speed changes. Choose these options for switching between fastening tasks; they are not a measured promise against stripped screws. Its 1/4-inch one-touch hex chuck supports quick bit changes. The maker lists 1,590 in-lb maximum torque and speed ceilings of 1,100, 2,100, 3,200 and 3,600 RPM. Comparable torque-test conditions were not established, so the rating does not determine its rank. A light ring illuminates the bit area, and the listed body length is 4.5 inches. XDT20Z uses Makita 18V LXT batteries, sold separately with the charger. The page’s weight descriptions conflict about battery inclusion; confirm assembled weight with your chosen pack. [1] [2] [3]

Milwaukee M12 FUEL 3453-20
Milwaukee M12 FUEL 3453-20
Compact access on the M12 platform
Why it fits
- The M12 is the cabinet-access pick for a listed 5-inch body length and 7.6-inch height with a CP 2.0Ah battery. Four-mode Drive Control includes a dedicated self-tapping screw mode. This smaller-platform choice is physically distinct from the M18 model below. Milwaukee rates it up to 1,500 in-lb and 3,600 RPM in Mode 3, without establishing comparable torque-test conditions here. Its 1/4-inch hex holder supports single-handed bit insertion. Choose the appropriate mode rather than interpreting the maximum rating as a cabinet screw setting. Tri-LED lighting surrounds the bit, and a belt clip is included. It uses M12 batteries and chargers; they are not included in this tool-only selection. The page lists 2lb without clearly identifying the battery basis. Confirm assembled weight and budget separately for a battery or accessory bit holder. [4] [5] [6]

Milwaukee M18 FUEL 2953-20
Milwaukee M18 FUEL 2953-20
A short head for users already on M18
Why it fits
- The M18 2953-20 suits an existing M18 owner who wants four-mode Drive Control, including a self-tapping screw mode, in a listed 4.47-inch body. That metal-screw mode is a specific option rather than a general wood-screw clutch. Milwaukee lists 2,000 in-lb torque and 3,900 RPM. The retained listing does not define comparable torque-test conditions, so these are maker figures rather than a measured driving advantage. A 1/4-inch hex holder accepts bits with single-handed insertion. Tri-LED lighting and an included metal belt clip support work-area access and carrying. The tool works with M18 batteries and chargers, separately purchased for this configuration. Its listed 2.2lb weight lacks an explicit battery basis; check the weight with your intended pack. DEWALT DCF860B
DEWALT DCF860B
Nine LEDs and an extended work-light setting
Why it fits
- DCF860B is the lighting-focused pick: nine LEDs and a 20-minute work-light setting accompany a variable trigger and three speed selections. DEWALT describes the lower two speeds as matched to common self-drilling and tapping screw installation speeds; follow the specific screw instructions. The 1/4-inch quick-connect hex chuck serves interchangeable driving bits. The maker states up to 2,500 in-lb rated maximum torque and 3,800 RPM no-load speed. Its relative torque footnote uses a DCB2108 battery against DCF787; that comparison is not a final torque setting for your fastener. The tool-only package includes a belt hook, with battery and charger sold separately. It uses DEWALT 20V MAX batteries; the maker identifies 18V nominal voltage. Exact assembled weight was not established on the retained page. Choose its controls and lighting if you already use this platform. [10] [11] [12]

Preset wood-screw and metal-screw drive modes
Why it fits
- Bosch suits a buyer who wants preset auto-drive modes for wood screws and self-drilling metal screws, alongside two speed/torque settings. The interface also provides LED-light control. These presets are conveniences, not a tested guarantee of screw depth. The 1/4-inch quick-change hex chuck has a power groove for bit retention. Bosch lists up to 1,900 in-lb torque, 3,300 no-load RPM and 3,800 impacts per minute, without a comparable torque-test method established here. Its specific wood-screw preset distinguishes it from metal-only assist descriptions. The maker lists 2.2lb tool-only weight, LED work lights and an included belt clip. Choose a compatible Bosch 18V/AMPShare battery and charger separately. Verify the exact pack compatibility rather than assuming every battery with an 18V label fits. [13] [14] [15]

FLEX FX1371A-1H
FLEX FX1371A-1H
One-handed bit insertion and ejection
Why it fits
- FLEX suits frequent bit changes: its 1/4-inch Quick Eject collet inserts and releases bits with one hand. Three speed modes have listed ceilings of 1,900, 2,700 and 4,000 RPM. T1 and T2 are additional self-tapping modes intended for specified screws and sheet-metal applications. FLEX lists 2,500 in-lb maximum torque without comparable test conditions established here. Its manual says T modes operate at the selected mode’s highest rotation speed regardless of trigger pressure. Use the manual’s screw and material table instead of treating these modes as gentle cabinet settings. The body is listed at 4.7 inches long and 2.7lb without battery; the supplied 6.0Ah pack adds weight. This FLEX 24V kit includes a 280W charger, case, bit holder and belt clip. Its LED is on the tool base. Choose it for bit handling and a complete platform entry. [16] [17] [18]

Metabo HPT WH18DC
A documented low-speed Soft mode
Why it fits
- WH18DC suits a buyer who wants a documented Soft mode capped at 900 RPM. Its five choices also include Power, Bolt, Bolt single and self-drilling screw modes. A 1/4-inch hex holder and triple LEDs support driving access; no vibration advantage is claimed here. The manual defines its 1,859 in-lb maximum using a fully charged pack, an M16 high-tension bolt, 68°F/20°C and three seconds of tightening. That test does not establish torque delivered to a deck screw or cabinet joint. Its modes also have different no-load speed ceilings. The listed body length is 4.5 inches. The manual gives 2.9lb with the BSL1820M 2.0Ah pack attached, a useful assembled-weight basis. This kit includes two such packs, a UC18YFSL charger and case, and accepts Metabo HPT 18V or 18V/36V MultiVolt batteries. [19] [20] [21]

Simple three-speed selection with included bit storage
Why it fits
- RIDGID suits an existing RIDGID 18V user who wants three straightforward speed ranges: 0–900, 0–2,000 and 0–2,900 RPM. The selected R862311B is the three-speed model, distinct from the R862312 four-mode driver. Its 1/4-inch hex drive, LED light, included bit holder and belt clip cover ordinary bit handling and carrying. Match the mode to the screw and material
Bosch explicitly offers a wood-screw preset. Makita combines low-start assistance with separate metal-screw tightening modes. Milwaukee’s dedicated self-tapping mode and FLEX’s T1/T2 modes address different metal-fastening tasks. Metabo HPT documents a 900 RPM Soft mode. Names such as Assist or Control do not establish identical behavior across brands. [13] [1] [4] [7] [16] [17] [19]
An advertised maximum is not the torque delivered to a finished cabinet or deck connection. Metabo HPT specifies an M16 bolt, full charge, temperature and tightening duration for its rating; DEWALT’s relative torque footnote uses a particular DCB2108 battery. Comparable conditions are not established for every pick. RIDGID’s conflicting fields are omitted. Use the fastener’s installation instructions instead of treating a mode selector as a calibrated torque setting. [20] [11] [29]
Compare bit handling, batteries and assembled size
FLEX supports one-handed insertion and ejection; RYOBI specifically describes one-handed release. Milwaukee and SKIL describe one-handed insertion or collet operation, while Makita uses a one-touch hex chuck. All selected models take 1/4-inch hex driving bits. Separate onboard bit storage from the chuck: FLEX and RIDGID include bit holders, while Milwaukee M12 lists a compatible accessory holder. [16] [18] [23] [5] [6] [8] [26] [2] [29]
Choose the battery platform you already use, or compare complete kit contents. M12 and M18 are separate systems. FLEX supplies a 6.0Ah pack; Metabo HPT supplies two 2.0Ah packs; the selected SKIL kit supplies USB-C charging equipment. A voltage number alone does not establish compatibility, and capacity changes carrying size and weight. [6] [9] [18] [21] [25]
Bosch’s 2.2lb figure is explicitly tool only; FLEX’s 2.7lb excludes the battery; Metabo HPT’s 2.9lb includes the specified 2.0Ah pack. Other pages leave the basis unclear or contain conflicting fields. Compare complete tools with the packs you will use. For dim cabinet interiors, light placement also matters: Makita has a ring, both Milwaukee picks have three LEDs, DEWALT has nine LEDs and FLEX places its light on the base. How we compared.
Source-based comparison of current US maker pages and manuals read October 3, 2026. Pro Tool Reviews’ buying guide informed the emphasis on variable trigger control, selectable modes and battery-platform fit. Makita leads for its assist, tightening and reverse-stop options; other picks address compact access, work lighting, bit changes or existing batteries. We have not tested driving speed, vibration, noise, runtime or final fastening torque. Maker torque ratings use different or unspecified test conditions and do not determine this ranking. Follow the tool and fastener instructions; electronic modes do not establish a calibrated final torque. Ranking is independent of commission.
