Franklin Sensors ProSensor M210
Franklin Sensors ProSensor M210
A full-width view without a calibration step
Why it fits
- Franklin’s M210 leads for showing an object’s width rather than only an edge. Its 13 sensors drive 21 LEDs; the maker lists a 1.7-inch detection depth and no calibration step. The display follows edges and center together, with a bubble level and pencil caddy. The manual specifies two AA batteries and warns that some objects and live wires may go undetected. Choose it for ordinary wall scanning, not material identification: the manual says density changes can represent pipes, wires or other objects. Heavy texture and metallic coverings can interfere. Kreg Magnetic Stud Finder KMM1000
Kreg Magnetic Stud Finder KMM1000
A battery-free locator with a level and marking notches
Why it fits
- KMM1000 uses two magnets to locate screws or nails associated with wood or metal framing. It is our magnetic pick when a bubble level and centered marking notches are useful. The plastic tool can hang hands free at a detected fastener. It needs no batteries and makes no electronic center or edge measurement; the separate Laser-Mark model is not this product. Its indication follows magnetic metal, not the full width of wood. Fastener depth and the wall covering determine whether it grips; do not interpret an attachment point as a complete wall survey. Bosch GMS120-27
Bosch GMS120-27
Material indications and a marking ring
Why it fits
- GMS120-27 suits buyers who want indications for wood or steel studs, metal and live wiring. A color-coded marking ring and center indication help transfer the result to the wall. Bosch lists IP54 construction, a rubber casing and a soft pouch. It runs on two included AA batteries, with a separately sold 3.7V Li-ion option. The published metal depths differ: up to four inches for steel and 4-3/4 inches for copper. Those are metal-target limits, not a promise to locate wood studs that deep. [7] [8] [9]

Zircon MultiScanner HD900c OneStep
Zircon MultiScanner HD900c OneStep
Separate stud, deep, metal and AC scanning modes
Why it fits
- HD900c combines StudScan, DeepScan, Metal Scan and AC Scan. Zircon lists stud detection up to 3/4 inch normally and 1-1/2 inches in DeepScan, with center and edge indications. A color-changing LCD, SpotLite pointer and marking groove support the readout. It requires a 9V alkaline battery; its automatic correction feature addresses errors such as starting over a stud. WireWarning concerns live unshielded AC, with a stated limit up to two inches under specified conditions. Zircon says wall composition changes results and does not recommend this model for lath and plaster. [10] [11] [12]

DEWALT DW0150
DEWALT DW0150
Directional arrows and a direct center mark
Why it fits
- DW0150 is the slim center-finding choice. DEWALT specifies detection of wood and metal up to 1-1/2 inches, with constant automatic calibration. Directional LEDs and an audible alert guide the user to a center marking channel. The product page lists AAA batteries and an AC/live-wire detection feature. Choose it when a center mark is more useful than a whole-width LED display. Its live-wire alert is an additional signal, not permission to drill; check the current manual and wall conditions. RYOBI Whole Stud Detector ESF5002
RYOBI Whole Stud Detector ESF5002
One-handed scanning with a built-in marker
Why it fits
- ESF5002 suits buyers who want to mark without picking up a separate pencil. RYOBI describes one-handed operation and a built-in stud marker. Multiple LEDs show the stud’s full width, and the product page specifies detection on wood and metal. The listed package includes two AAA batteries and the operator’s manual. The reviewed product text does not establish a numeric depth limit or calibration procedure. Confirm both in the supplied manual for your wall, rather than borrowing specifications from another RYOBI finder. [16] [17] [18]

Walabot DIY 2 M
Walabot DIY 2 M
Phone-based images for compatible drywall projects
Why it fits
- DIY 2 M offers phone-based graphical representations of studs and pipes/wires, plus an Expert mode showing radar data. It is the option for buyers who prefer an image to indicator lights. The device connects by Wi-Fi to iOS or Android phones and has its own rechargeable battery with a USB-C cable. The maker states detection up to four inches inside drywall. Walabot limits this model to drywall and plywood. It excludes lath and plaster, concrete, tiles, bricks, metal-backed walls and stucco. Check current app requirements for your phone; the image is not a clearance certificate. [19] [20] [21]

CRAFTSMAN Hi-Vis Stud Sensor CMHT77633
CRAFTSMAN Hi-Vis Stud Sensor CMHT77633
Basic edge finding with a pencil notch
Why it fits
- CMHT77633 is the simple edge-finding choice. Its manual describes electronic detection through drywall and plywood up to 3/4 inch; the current page also lists wood and metal stud edges. A red LED and audible tone indicate an edge, with a pencil notch for marking it. The manual specifies a 9V battery and calibration against the wall away from a stud. This is not direct center detection: the manual has you mark opposite edges and use the midpoint. It warns that nearby pipes or wiring can be mistaken for studs; generic laser-tool copy on the page is not a feature of this model. [22] [23] [24]

The StudBuddy Magnetic Stud Finder
The StudBuddy Magnetic Stud Finder
A simple hands-free fastener marker for drywall
Why it fits
- The original StudBuddy uses neodymium magnets to find the screw or nail heads holding drywall to framing. It suits occasional hanging jobs where a simple physical marker is enough. The plastic body sticks at a detected fastener so it can remain as a reference point. There are no batteries or moving parts, and no electronic calibration step. This is a drywall fastener locator, not a device that displays both edges or measures the center of wood. Finding one metal point does not establish what else lies behind the chosen mounting area. Rack-A-Tiers Stud Ball 52300
Rack-A-Tiers Stud Ball 52300
A finger-loop magnet for sweeping over fasteners
Why it fits
- Stud Ball is the magnetic option for buyers who prefer a finger loop and a small spherical locator. Rack-A-Tiers identifies part 52300 for finding metal, including screws or nails in wood-framed walls. It is battery-free and can hang at a detected metal point. The maker lists use through 1/2- or 5/8-inch drywall and 3/4-inch plywood; these are stated applications rather than our tests. Its magnet cannot distinguish a fastener from another magnetic object or show a wood stud’s full width. We do not adopt the maker’s speed, strongest-magnet or never-misses claims. [28] [29] [30]

Choose the readout that suits the job
Full-width LED displays on M210 and ESF5002 show more than a single edge. DW0150 points toward a center mark; CMHT77633 requires marking both edges and taking their midpoint. Kreg adds a level and notches to a magnetic locator. Choose the marking workflow you can use consistently on your wall. [1] [17] [14] [24] [4]
Magnetic tools find fasteners or other magnetic metal. That makes Kreg, StudBuddy and Stud Ball useful physical references, but a hit does not identify the whole width of wood or classify every object behind the wall. [6] [27] [30]
Match depth and wall material before buying
Depth numbers describe different targets. Bosch’s metal limits cannot be used as wood-stud limits; Zircon specifies separate normal and deep stud modes. Walabot’s four-inch claim applies inside drywall, with explicit exclusions for plaster, masonry, tile and other surfaces. Confirm actual wall construction before choosing by the largest advertised number. [9] [10] [21] [20]
A wire warning is not an all-clear indicator. Franklin’s manual explicitly warns that hidden objects and live wires may be missed, and density changes may be something other than studs. Follow the model’s current precautions before penetrating a surface; this comparison does not establish where it is safe to drill or what a mounting point can support. [2] [3]
How we compared.
Source-based comparison of current manufacturer pages and selected manuals, researched October 22, 2026. Kenny Koehler’s Pro Tool Reviews M210 review favors its width display for drywall while cautioning about lath and plaster; that is one attributed review, not owner consensus. We rank M210 first for a wide readout without a calibration step, then distinguish magnetic simplicity, material indications and marking workflows. We have not tested detection accuracy or depth. Advertised limits are conditional and cannot certify a clear drilling route. Rankings are independent of commission.
