All 10 picks, in order.

  1. #1

Best starting point for ordinary soil

    MSR Groundhog Tent Stakes

Campers who want a versatile core set for common dirt campsites.

    Why it fits

    • The 7.5-in Y-beam combines a moderate carrying weight with a broad soil-use brief. [1] [2] [3]

    Before you choose

    • The 7.5-in Y-beam is a general soil stake; MSR offers a separate broad Blizzard design for sand and snow. [1] [2] [16]

    Check before buying:

    • Check that your tent loops and guy cord fit the head notch.

Model: Groundhog Tent Stakes, six-pack · Exact named stake length and pack count; confirm selection before buying · US

  2. #2

    Best for muddy pack-up

    NEMO Sweepstake

Campers who dislike putting dirty stakes back beside their tent fabric.

    Why it fits

    • The integrated scraper gives this Y-stake a useful cleanup feature on muddy campsites. [4] [5] [6]

    Before you choose

    • The scraper and tether add parts and bulk; 120 g is the pack total, so compare it with whole kits. [4] [5] [6]

    Check before buying:

    • Practice sliding the scraper over the stake before packing muddy gear.

Model: Sweepstake, six-pack · Exact named stake length and pack count; confirm selection before buying · US

  3. #3

Best steel option for car camping

    Snow Peak Solid Stake #30

Vehicle campers staking a large tent or tarp on firm campground soil.

    Why it fits

    • A foot-long forged steel stake is a purposeful choice when carrying weight matters less than a substantial anchor. [7] [8] [9]

    Before you choose

    • At 180 g each, a set becomes heavy quickly; it is a poor fit for a light backpacking kit. [7] [8] [9]

    Check before buying:

    • Confirm the #30 length rather than shorter #20 or longer #40 models.

Model: Solid Stake #30, R-103 · Exact named stake length and pack count; confirm selection before buying · US

  4. #4

Best spiral profile for soft soil

    MSR Cyclone Tent Stakes

Campers expecting loose dirt where a short straight stake is a poor match.

    Why it fits

    • The spiral shape and 9.5-in length prioritize soil engagement over the smallest packed kit. [10] [11] [12]

    Before you choose

    • It is considerably heavier than compact backpacking stakes and needs room for its full length in the ground. [10] [11] [12]

    Check before buying:

    • Check whether the site has sufficient soil depth rather than a shallow layer over rock.

Model: Cyclone Tent Stakes, four-pack · Exact named stake length and pack count; confirm selection before buying · US

  5. #5

    Best compact Y-stake

    MSR Mini-Groundhog Tent Stakes

Backpackers choosing a lighter set for medium-to-firm soil.

    Why it fits

    • The compact Y-beam and 9.4-g individual weight make it easy to carry several anchor points. [13] [14] [15]

    Before you choose

    • MSR targets the smaller Y-beam at medium-to-firm soil; choose a dedicated broad shape for loose sand or snow. [13] [16]

    Check before buying:

    • Confirm the Mini stake length and dealer stock; do not confuse it with full-size Groundhog.

Model: Mini-Groundhog Tent Stakes, six-pack · Exact named stake length and pack count; confirm selection before buying · US

  6. #6

Best dedicated sand and snow shape

    MSR Blizzard Tent Stakes

Campers who need a wide anchor for sand or seasonal snow rather than ordinary dirt.

    Why it fits

    • The broad profile and deadman option serve loose material that calls for a different shape from a thin pin. [16] [17] [18]

    Before you choose

    • The broad shape takes more bag space and is not a substitute for a narrow stake on firm, stony ground. [16] [17] [18]

    Check before buying:

    • Learn the shelter maker’s anchoring method for the sand or snow conditions you expect.

Model: Blizzard Tent Stakes, four-pack · Exact named stake length and pack count; confirm selection before buying · US

  7. #7

Best light peg with low attachment points

Sea to Summit Ground Control Light Tent Pegs

Backpackers who want several tie-off heights in a lightweight stake.

    Why it fits

    • The multiple notches allow cord placement closer to the ground when a peg cannot be seated fully. [19] [20] [21]

    Before you choose

    • The short 15-cm length cannot offer the burial depth of longer soil-specific stakes; assess the hold at each site. [19] [20] [21]

    Check before buying:

    • Check that your cord fits the chosen notch and compare whole-kit weight.

Model: Ground Control Light Tent Pegs, six-pack · Exact named stake length and pack count; confirm selection before buying · US

  8. #8

    Best long aluminum shelter stake

Big Agnes Dirt Dagger UL 10-inch

Campers who want a long I-beam instead of a short backpacking peg.

    Why it fits

    • Its 10-in length and I-beam profile distinguish it from shorter Y-stakes for campsite shelters. [22] [23] [24]

    Before you choose

    • It needs more soil depth and pack length than a short peg, and its exact selected-variant weight remains unconfirmed. [22] [23] [24]

    Check before buying:

    • Select 10 in at checkout; the default page shows the 6-in variant.

Model: Single Dirt Dagger UL Stake, 10-inch · Exact named stake length and pack count; confirm selection before buying · US

  9. #9

    Best built-in guyline adjustment

    NEMO Airpin

Backpackers who value quick cord adjustment on a compact stake.

    Why it fits

    • The three-point head can hold and adjust guy cord without a separate cord lock. [25] [26] [27]

    Before you choose

    • Its compact 6-in body is shorter than soil-specific 9.5-in designs, and the maker’s minimum-weight scope is unclear; confirm the complete kit weight. [26] [27] [11]

    Check before buying:

    • Try your own guyline diameter in the locking head before a trip.

Model: Airpin Ultralight Stakes, set of two · Exact named stake length and pack count; confirm selection before buying · US

  10. #10

Best simple hook for tent loops

REI Co-op Aluminum Hook Tent Stake

Campers wanting an uncomplicated spare for loop attachment on ordinary dirt.

    Why it fits

    • The curved hook makes a straightforward attachment point for tent loops without a cleat or scraper. [28] [29] [30]

    Before you choose

    • Its simple narrow profile is a less specialized choice for loose sand than a wide snow-and-sand stake. [28] [29] [30]

    Check before buying:

    • Check that a broad fabric loop sits securely under the hook.

Model: Aluminum Hook Tent Stake, 7.25-inch · Exact named stake length and pack count; confirm selection before buying · US

[18]7 g per peg; this is not the weight of all six pegs and their packaging. [21]The current page does not clearly publish an exact weight for the selected 10-in single stake; confirm before building a weight-critical kit. [24]NEMO shows 10 g / 0.4 oz minimum weight on the two-stake listing without a clear per-stake or kit basis; confirm the scope before comparing weights. [27]REI lists 0.5 oz per individual stake. [30]

Build a kit around the ground

Start with a general Y-stake such as Groundhog for ordinary soil. MSR targets Cyclone’s long spiral at soft soil and Blizzard’s broad profile at sand or snow. A mix of shapes can cover more campsite conditions than ten copies of the lightest peg. [1] [10] [16]

Keep individual and kit weights separate

Groundhog’s 13.95 g is per stake, while Sweepstake’s 120 g is the packed six-stake product. Snow Peak lists 180 g for one Solid Stake #30. Compare the number of anchors your shelter needs using the same weight basis. [3] [6] [9]

Attachment matters as much as shape

Airpin locks cord at its head, Ground Control Light provides several attachment heights, and the REI Aluminum Hook has a simple curved head for loops. Test the chosen design with your own guyline or fabric loop before relying on it at camp. [25] [19] [28]
